Today was our best Thursday Theatre yet, we did shape plays about bears and whales. This focused us on an Alberta animal as well as a Nova Scotia animal which we are looking at in Social Studies. The students did a great job coming up with their own plays about these 2 animals.
We also looked at the food that the Mi'kmaqs eat and saw lots of connections between our diet and theirs. Our Mi'kmaq books are really coming together. See you tomorrow!

Today was a wonderful Wednesday. We made an official countdown till Christmas and we have 26 days left! This is hard to believe, at least for me.
We are busy all of our literacy work and the students have enjoyed making word clouds with their sight words to help with spelling. Today in Big Buddies, we started to make Christmas cards for the Seniors at Shagganappi Village. The grade 6's are going to sing there on December 20th, so we thought we could send something with them to brighten their holidays. Library books due tomorrow! I sent home late library notices today- please check. Thanks!! Today we had a terrific Tuesday in room 18. We did some writing for our friend Zayd who is the Star of the Week and also some creative writing based on picture prompts. The students are really growing as writers since their stamina is increasing
This afternoon we had the privilege of having the Foothills Brass play for us in the gym. We got to hear lots of songs from across Canada including the "Good Old Hockey Game". They were performing songs for Canada 150. The students really enjoyed this. Reminders to continue home reading and bring back library books! We have a few books overdue from our class. Also, next Friday is a PD day! Today the students worked VERY hard to complete their first offical retelling of a Robert Munsch books in their words. They worked in partners first to come up with the highlights from the beginning, middle and end of 'Down the Drain'! It is a very funny book so hopefully it was easier to recall. Then we looked at our ideas as a class to try to sort them better. Finally, they wrote down their own synopsis and they turned out very well! This is part of our School Development Goal of Reading Comprehension and we are on our way to success in this area.
We looked at our overnight experiment which was freezing our liquid Gatorade into a solid and it worked! We noticed we had to melt them a bit to make sure we could take the popsicles out, but then they held their shape just like a solid should! Very exciting! The students also made molecule booklets to show how close the molecules are for a solid, liquid and gas. Finally, we made Water Cycle Worlds! Hopefully the kids will show you them! We love to do lots of science on Friday afternoons since we don't have math on Fridays. Have a great weekend and enjoy the weather. We are looking forward to having Zayd as our Star of the Week on Monday! PS. School photos were send home to day if you ordered them. Today was a super reading day! We had library today and also reading with Aunt Gayle. We also read a few more Robert Munsch books together in Library. Also, the kids are loving playing Bingo with their new sights words in literacy teams. They should make a Sight Word Bingo game for home too!
In Science this afternoon, we did the Great Orange Drink Experiment to see how long it takes orange Gatorade to turn into a solid. We decided we need to freeze it overnight to get the best results. We know that the molecules will get closer as the liquid turns into a solid. We are looking forward to our results tomorrow. Heads up: I will send home the school pictures tomorrow if you ordered some! The toy sale was a hit today. The kids were able to manage their money and choose what they liked. We had an opportunity in class to share and enjoy our games with each other. Thank you for all your generous contributions to a great cause.
Physical Education update: We are doing kicking games in gym right now. Some of our favourites include kickball dodgeball and kickball bowling. We are building up to a big game of kickball eventually. Social Studies: The students completed their Mi'kmaq clothing section of their books today and then looked at various First Nations books from around Canada to gather more information. They love to look at the animals and the teepees especially. Great job with the home reading especially those who have bumped up a level! Way to go!! Today we starting learning about the Mi'kmaq people in Nova Scotia. Here is a word cloud of some of our takeaways about their traditional clothing: We are each making a book about the Mi'kmaq people and will continue to add more facts about their way of life in the weeks to come. Reminder about the Toy Sale tomorrow: This toy sale tomorrow will provide the funds to purchase the items for Stephen's backpacks. Tomorrow the students, during their gym time, will have a chance to go shopping. Items will vary in price (up to $10.00), and all the money will go toward filling the backpacks. Thank you in advance for your help in this cause. ![]()
Today was a wonderful day filled with 'kindness' activities in support of anti-bullying. The students had Big Buddies and made paper chains with words and actions that are kind, helpful and encouraging. They made them for the whole school to see how they can be kind too. They would love for you to see it tomorrow and Friday when you are here.
We also made cards for community members and decorated pink shirts! Very pink day! Ray Suarez would like you to read this update about sliding at our school: As a result of injuries (head, hands, arms, etc.), and the fact that we are unable to provide a dedicatedsupervisor for our icy hills, we have asked students to continue to enjoy the playground and other areas that are safe. Our supervisors are required to walk around their designated areas, monitor and interact with students to support their safety and any challenges that they may encounter. This request is in effect during school time and includes before and after school supervision times. Although we understand that many students can be safe and have fun, grave injuries can occur as a result of this activity. We thank you for your support and understanding to have a safe environment for all. We are sure that the children will have great fun under the supervision of parents/guardian/family etc. outside of school hours where the ratio is much lower. Thank you, everyone! Ray Suarez Principal Today Daxton B's Dad come in to teach us all about fire safety. We were so lucky to have him in our class. We learned many things including (the students shared these):
If the fire alarm goes off, get out! Water puts out fire Firefighters wear special gear. Firefighters wear cool hats. We learned about the oxygen mask. Firefighters wear fire pants and fire coats. We learned to stop, drop and roll. Each student got to try on the fire suit and looked a little small in it:) I will post a few pictures! Please check their backpacks for fire safety information that Todd generously gave to us! See you tomorrow for pink shirt day. If you don't have one, we can make pink |
