Today we turned a sinker, clay, into a floater, clay boats!!
Yesterday we tested to see if clay could float or sinker and discovered it sank (in a ball shape). Today we changed its shape and surface area and made floating clay boats. The students were able to make boats that carried up to 10 blocks! Then we did 'How to' writing about the best way to make these clay boats. The students are experts now! Remember tomorrow is pink shirt day:) If you don't have a pink shirt, feel free to wear red or orange.

This week we will be looking at the book/movie Wonder. The movie came out in November and is about a boy named Auggie who was born with a different face. The movie teaches us about choosing kindness and how to change the way we see people. I recommend seeing the movie as a family if you haven't already since we won't have time to see the whole thing in school-just clips. Thanks! I choose this book since this week we also have another Pink Sheet Day. Wednesday is our anti-bullying awareness day. We hope to spread our learning about Wonder and Choosing Kindness with the school that day by showing them ways to choose kindness.
This week's spelling words are: fly pie think take pretty every just know Heads up: Swimming lesson assessments were sent home today. Please check backpacks. See you tomorrow! Boat Building Challenge!
Today the students had to build a boat with materials of their choosing- and the only rule was it had to carry 7 blocks. It was a game of trail and error. They were able to test their boats on the water table and fix as necessary. They learned A LOT about buoyancy and how air is lighter than water. They also learned about how important balance and shape are for boats to float. It was quite the challenge. Thank you to all the families who came to celebrate culture at Rosscarrock School last night! It was a wonderful time to see everyone enjoying each other's countries. Have a great weekend! Happy Short Week Everyone!
Just a few important things to mention about this week: Yesterday we celebrated 100 days in Grade 1/2. We had a fabulous day filled with math games to 100, building towers to 100 and imaging we were 100 years old. What would that be like? The students had some fun ideas and impressions of themselves at that age. The Spelling Words for Friday are: him her live open round stop some walk Tomorrow night is Cultural Night. Families are invited to join us in the gym at 6:30 to 8pm for a school-wide celebration of our diverse school community. There will be dances, information and excitement from around the world. Thank you for a great day! We certainly felt the love and joy in our classroom today.
Thanks for all the lovely cards:) Today we did lots of Valentine-y things. We read about a book called Crankenstein about a kid who is a cranky kid at school on Valentine's Day. He has many emotions throughout the day and ends up surprising himself by having a good day by the end. We also made cards with out Big Buddies for all the teachers who work 'behind the scenes' to make our school a success such as the Principal, Vice- Principal, Secretaries, janitor, etc. We had a little party this afternoon where opened our cards and celebrated together. Rememeber: No School till next Tuesday- which is the 100th day of school for us! How exciting!! See you then. Today we learned about igloo building. The students were very curious about if igloos keep us warmer or colder and how to build the roof. We explored these questions together and learned that they do keep us warmer and the roof can be tricky, Valentine's Fun Tomorrow: We will have a little party in the afternoon- card swapping, invitation making, and some Valentine's charades. Healthy treats are welcome to share tomorrow such as fruit, vegetables and/or popcorn. Please see the blog post from yesterday for names of our classmates.
