Sorry I got yesterday's day wrong, but I am glad everyone realized I meant Thursday was yesterday and that picture day was today!!
Today was a super fun Friday. We learned more about the ocean through puzzles and a bingo game. We are looking at sea creatures and other living things in the ocean, in hopes of understanding how we all rely on the water and how important the ocean is to all living things. Next week, we will be looking more at the coasts of Canada, the Pacific and Atlantic, to see the differences in Canadian lifestyles in the interior and on the ocean. Feel free to start the conversations about coastlines at home or look at videos together. This week we have been having a few issues with having gentle hands ALL the time, Recess can be a hard place to always have self-control of our bodies and hands, but it is extremely important that we do so. I ask that you have conversation at home, just to make sure we all know and remember how to use our hands to treat ourselves and others nicely. This week there have just been a few MINOR times where some students have forgotten how to use their hands, but if we can be more aware of it, I am positive we will have no more accidents! Thanks! Have a great weekend, and enjoy the weather while we can:) Also here is a note from the CBE: Dear parents, As our teaching and learning strategies evolve to include even more digital resources, the Calgary Board of Education’s wireless infrastructure has become even more important. New technology is needed to address current and forecasted demands for a comprehensive, reliable wireless network. The CBE is thus embarking on a plan to replace wireless infrastructure in every school and facility. Rosscarrock will now be a part of the new strategy. The new wireless platform will be launched on October 5, 2017. Once the new infrastructure is launched, it will provide: § Significantly improved capacity; § Annual (once per year) registration of personally owned devices, eliminating the need for daily logging in / out;
Visit the CBE Wireless page to learn more about the project and how to connect to the Wi-Fi network. Thank you for your support.

Don't forget our picture day is tomorrow- we are in the morning before recess so that is a plus!
We had a great day today in our class. We have done a lot of work with sight words in literacy stations in the last couple days. We have been making puzzles from words that are broken up. This is a fun way to make our sight words come to life. Continue to practice these words at home by making simple sentences. We made Canadian murals today out of symbols from various Canadian books. Many murals included hockey symbols, animals and flags since those are most interesting to us right now! We will continue to share them with each other tomorrow. Have a great night. See you tomorrow! Today was a wonderful Wednesday in Room 18! We had a birthday celebration for Dax B, where he wanted to give all his friends gifts. He generously gave 2 Pokemon cards to each person in our class! A big thank you to him. We have another birthday tomorrow, so we are all very excited. Today was the Terry Fox Run at our school! Everyone did a FANTASTIC JOB and gave it their best!!! You all rock! We counted 202 laps from our class in total.Thank you to everyone who took time to raise money as well, we all know its an important cause that affects everyone. We learned more about Terry today too and most kids felt inspired to run for him after learning the story (again). PICTURE DAY FRIDAY! I have been seeing a lot of haircuts this week, so I can tell people know its coming:) Happy Reading Tonight! Here is a note from Calgary Reads looking for Volunteers: Reading and growing in schools across Alberta Creating a culture of reading is a collaborative effort, involving schools, educators, families, researchers, volunteers and community partners. The Alberta Reads Network brings all those groups together for a common purpose: to ignite children’s passion for reading. Through this collaborative partnership, we work directly with school districts in urban centres as Calgary Reads Novels and with individual schools across the province as Chapters. Our expanding network of Alberta schools is bringing the joy of reading to young students across the province. Trained volunteers are reading aloud to children, schools are hosting events to celebrate literacy and promote reading inside and outside the classroom and Calgary Reads’ programs, resources and supports are making a difference to hundreds of Alberta children every day. Make a difference one book at time There’s something magical about reading books aloud to children. It opens their minds and hearts to reading and sparks a sense of curiosity that can energize a lifetime of learning. Calgary Reads offers several school-based reading and tutoring programs for young children. And we need your help. Each program relies on volunteers to make them successful. You can volunteer as an individual or as a member of your work or community team. Thank you to everyone who has a successful start with home reading last night. Most people finished their book and got a new one today. Also, pay attention to the difference between 'too easy' and able to read. They should be able to read these books all by themselves so they might not be 'too easy' but actually a good fit. If you are noticing that they really are too easy after one read through, and this happens a few nights in a row, please send me a note. Thank you!
We made some sea creatures today in Science as we head into our Ocean unit. I will post pictures below. They are very cool! Don't forget Terry Fox Run tomorrow! Good Evening,
I just want to inform you of one other positive thing that happened today:) Student Voice is a group of role models in our school, that 2 kids from our class were a part of today. We have a grade 1 student and a grade 2 student participating in this club every Monday to talk about how they can be leaders in our school. Each class, grades 1 to 6, has 2 representatives, planning to meet once a week. They will meet all together with Ms. Goodwin- the Assistant Principal and talk about different issues and ways they can help their peers. From their meeting today: Student Voice discussed Lunchroom expectations today and wanted to share this with each class's blog. Check it out: Happy New Week!
We are off to a great start today with Daxton Berry as our Star of the Week! He shared lots about his interests and we started to write a book for him. Ms. Mosolf also just informed me he was the basic fact champ of the day in grade. 2 math! Go Daxton Go! We are eager to learn more about during this week as well. Check your backpacks! A little dental kit was sent home to each student, which is an initiative run by a teacher at this school to promote health and well-being. Enjoy! HOME READING STARTED TODAY: Each student knows what reading level they are at now, and has chosen a book to read at home tonight. Please have your child read to you, of course you can help and give hints, but encourage them to read on their own and infer words from pictures. Once the story has been read together a few times (in most cases), have them fill in the home reading chart. Date, Title, Level and Initials of a parent. They will bring back their book, and home record sheet in the bag once a book is done, so they can exchange it for a new one. Every ten books, they will earn a sticker and have the chance to move levels. Thank you so much with your help and enthusiasm around this! The more they do it, the more fluent they will become. Looking ahead to this week: Terry Fox Run Wednesday at 10:30-11:30. Please dress for the weather. School photos on Friday for our class. See you tomorrow! I am looking forward to meeting everyone. Please bring your student with you to the conference so they can tour you around and help discuss all the great things they have been up to. I am hoping to learn more about your child through our time together! So, I would like you to think of 2 stars (awesome things) about your child and one wish (goal) for this year. I hope that hearing from you about what they excel in and where they need to grow will guide me in teaching this year! This is totally optional, but something to think about when looking towards this time we have to discuss your grade 1 or 2 student! Please don't worry about writing it down, its just to get you thinking. Thank you and see you tomorrow!
Today was a busy- fun filled day! We did some new things today. The students are now in math in different class than their own in some cases, The grade 2's are will Ms. Mosolf's and the grade 1's have been divided into two groups between myself and Ms. Johnson. We are all very excited about this differentiated program, designed to meet their needs more specially. I am very hopeful about this for each of your children.
Also, we started to get into fall mode by doing a leaf hunt! If you have any red leaves at home, please bring them tomorrow. We don't need too many, but we are missing that variety from our school playground. We have tonnes of brown and yellow though, so please don't bring more of those:) Tomorrow we will be experimenting with the leaves in Science! Very exciting. Also, book orders were sent home today. I will find out when they are due asap! Another update on Terry Fox Run: My apologies- our school picture day is on September 28, so we have rescheduled the Terry Fox run to Wednesday September 27. Thanks, and again, so sorry! Also, please send your stickers for the run into me tomorrow! Thanks! Library books tomorrow too! Have a great night- see you tomorrow. Hello Parents
