We had a wonderful day today in the winter wonderland. We made poems about the snow with new and interesting adjectives. The students love the snow.
Tomorrow is PJ day and the last day of school before break! Also, please bring library books back tomorrow if you have any checked out. Thanks. Report Cards home tomorrow. Today was a very exciting day. We did Christmas Caroling together as a whole school in the gym and the students even got the chance to led us with their instruments.
After, the Grade 1's stayed in the gym to receive a gift from TD Bank. They generously donated a book to each kid titled 'Good Morning, Canada'. It is a beautiful book displaying many scenes from around the country. Please check for it in backpacks! Also, each students received a stuffy from the Toy Drop at the Saddledome. They all were so excited about reading their new stories with new reading buddies (stuffies). I hope everything makes it home okay. Tomorrow is a regular day and Thursday is Pajama Day! You can definitely feel the anticipation of Christmas around here! It is very exciting for everyone. 7 days left on our Christmas countdown!!!
Today in Social we enjoyed starting to make our own Acadian Village- complete with a family farm and crops. We will be wrapping up this Nova Scotia Unit this week in order to study the Inuit people in the New Year. I hope you saw my post from yesterday about important dates for this week. We have a lot going on. Tomorrow we will be singing Christmas Carols with the school. Student Voice voted on Thursday being Pajama Day on Thursday which is a fun last day of school. Reports cards go home that day too. Dear Parents/Guardians,
It has been an incredible 2017 year at Rosscarrock School! Our students, staff and parent community have dedicated great time and effort into teaching and learning this year. We have seen great growth in students in many socio-emotional and academic areas, and this should be reflected in student Report Cards going home on Thursday. We would like to thank you for volunteering and for your various contributions and supports towards Rosscarrock School. We would not be the great little school that we are without our dedicated families. On behalf of Rosscarrock staff, we wish you a Merry Christmas/Happy Winter break and a Happy New Year! May all of you enjoy the holidays with friends and family and come back well rested. We will see students back on Monday, January 8, 2018! Please keep the envelope in a safe place and return it back on the first day of school.Pijama Day!!!!!! We ask that students take their water bottles home to wash J Friday, December 22: Non-instructional Day (No School). All remaining Lost and Found items will be donated to charity. We start fresh in January. We wish to thank our School Council for giving $500 for a staff, in school lunch on our last day. What a gift, thank you!!! Today we watched the Spanish Winter Concert. We really enjoyed all the songs even though we couldn't necessarily understand them. The English program will perform our songs in the Spring for you.
We also had Big Buddies and made some lovely Christmas and Winter cards together. The students are also getting really into writing Christmas stories and they have a "sale" going on. They actually just make books and give them away at recess to friends. It's very sweet! Library books due tomorrow! Today I sent home a copy of the spelling words to Teams Orange and Red. Please check your home reading bags so you can review them at home.
In Social Studies today, Josh and Logan from Ms. Mosolf's class come and taught us about the Acadians coming over from France to trade with the Mi'kmaq people about 400 years ago. These two experts taught us about how they traded tools, clothing and skills between these groups and became friends until the English people sailed over and got greedy! Then shipped the Acadians and Mi'kmaqs to Louisiana- creating the Cajuns. The First Nations taught people to live off the land until the land was stolen- its seems like an all too familiar story. It is quite interesting to learn about all these groups together and will explore these stories more in the week until Christmas. We also played soccer outside today even though it was a bit windy, but the gym is being used for the Spanish Winter concert. We are going to watch the Dress Rehearsal tomorrow morning. We are looking forward to seeing some of our friends in other classes perform. Stay healthy and have good night! Sorry it has been a little while since my last post- I was sick on Thursday and my Dad covered. The kids got a kick out of it and Mr. Groen has a great time. The kids said I can be sick again so he can come in again haha. A few kids were sick today, so there is something going around. Just a heads up to you to monitor and keep your kids healthy during this flu season (if possible).
Today we watched the movie The Peace Tree for the second time together. It is beautiful story of students in grade one coming together and finding peace at Christmas despite being different religions. One of the girls in the movie is Muslim and the other is Christians and they get excited for each other on Eid and Christmas even if they both don't celebrate it. The girls in the movie see their difference as special and exciting and it's about peace being the commonality. We talked about this together and the kids are at the perfect age to be understanding and generous. We have decided to make our own Peace Tree to teach others at our school about Peace. We want everyone to feel welcome during this holiday season. Also 2 literacy teams will have their first Spelling Test on Friday, Team Orange and Team Red. Ask your child if they are in these groups. The word list is: after like good on saw under all soon I will also send home a copy tomorrow in Home Reading. I am hoping to get the students spelling their sight words better every time they write! Thanks for your help with this. Take care! Stay healthy! Dear families,
Thank you to all the parents and students who have donated and purchased toys in support of the Stephen’s backpack project. Rosscarrock School has almost reached it’s campaign goal of filling 34 backpacks! The school still has 9 backpacks that require filling. Please contact Brenna Fraser [email protected] by December 11 if you & your family are interested in picking up a backpack to fill together with new items for a child in need. Here is a list of suggested items for the backpacks. http://www.stephensbackpacks.com/stephens-backpacks-projects/what-goes-into-a-stephens-backpacks-backpack/ Please note that a backpack and a stuffy are provided. Filled backpacks need to be returned to the school by December 14. Thank you for your continued support for Stephen’s Backpack. |
