Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are getting closer to our second annual Cultural Night! If you are interested in participating but misplaced the pink form with the information you can still participate. We are looking for parents who would like to show their wonderful heritage and culture by sharing samples of food, toys, artifacts or pictures with the rest of our students, parents and teachers. The event will be held on February 22 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. School will provide tables, cutlery and stationary items to help to set up the presentations. Please let Mrs. Fraser ([email protected]) know if you would like to participate as well as with the country you will represent. We will be sending out more information with details to the parents who would like to participate. Thank you to the parents who already responded. Greetings, The Cultural Committee

In the last two days, I have sent home a new book with each student. This book was donated by an organization called Literacy for Kids. They promote reading and access to literacy for kids who need it! They supported our school at Christmas by giving us each a stuffy to read with and now we each got a book. Thanks to them!!!
Today, we did work with the fairytale unit by describing our own characters we would add to the book- either a fourth pig or a forth wolf. Their adjectives are getting more interesting every day! Also, we looked at non-fiction books to help our research about Artic animals. Tomorrow- we will look at text features of non-fiction books. See you then! Today we started our new Fairy Tale of the week. This week we are doing The Three Little Pigs. After reading it through, the students had to plan their own house, imaging their was a 4th pig to build for. They had a friendly competition on who could plan, draw and share the strongest house with the class. They came up with some great ideas such as building with diamonds, adding security cameras, force fields and laser beams. They got very creative! We will continue more conversations about these structures and the big bad wolf this week!
We have been building more lately because we are getting ready for boat building next week. With that being said, we need materials. So I am hoping that you can share your recycling with us. Please send it with your student this week. Ideas of what we need are: -cardboards like cereal boxes and toilet paper rolls -plastic bottles -juice bottles -milk jugs Please clean everything out well before sending it in. Thanks so much in advance! Spelling words this week are: ate eat now pretty our say they this Reminder: no school tomorrow!!!
Also, great job again this week on the spelling tests. Thanks for all the practice at home. We wrapped up our week of studying Little Red Riding Hood with a Thursday Theatre puppet show. It was very well done, especially with Dax B and Wesley as narrators. In math, I would like the grade 1's to practice fact families and counting backwards this weekend- from as high as you can. We have been doing more fact families together and they really help with number sense. Thanks! Have a great long weekend. Reminder to return pink cultural forms sent home last week if you would like to participate. Email me if you need another one! Thank you!
Today we continued to look at Little Red Riding Hood and Nunavut. These are our 2 main focuses we are learning about this week. We also talked about trains, in order to share what we learned yesterday at the Canadian Pacific Railroad presentation. Tomorrow is Big Buddies and Thursday is Library! Today we had a special musical performance called the Birth of the CPR. The students were totally into it and were moving and shaking right along. We learned about how it all began and the work that was put into building trains in the late 1800s. We especially enjoyed learning about the mountain explosions that needed to happen in order to build through the Rockies! See picture below. New spelling words were introduced today for Team Orange and Red. They are: yes but did into new out ride that The test will be Thursday this week since Friday is a P.D. Day! Great job this week on writing and spelling! I can tell there is lots of practice going on at home so thank you!
Today we watched the movie Inside Out with all the English Grade 1/2 classes. I highly recommend this movie and its explanation of emotions. They are sadness, fear, joy, disgust, and anger. The students seemed to enjoy watching it too! Next week we are going to explore more about how these emotions affect us. Also, we will talk about how we experience with them on a daily basis. This movie is a great way to start having conversations about tough emotions, if you would like do so more with your child at home. On Monday we have a special musical presentation coming to our school. It is all about the Birth of the CPR (Railroad). We will get to enjoy that in the morning. Have a great weekend and enjoy the outdoors if you can! Rosscarrock School and the parents of School Council would like to host our second annual Cultural Night. Students (with the help of their parents) have the opportunity to represent different countries and participate by bringing food, talent, decorations and costumes.
We are looking for parents who would like to share their culture with other students in the school by partaking in this event. The Cultural Night will be held at Rosscarrock School on Thursday, February 22 from 6:30pm-8pm. We are hoping to build on the participation and positive energy that was generated from this event last year. School Council is looking for parents to represent different countries and indicate how you would like to participate. If you are interested, please fill out the form below and you will receive more information in the near future. Our intent is to collect all the information from the people who want to participate, divide them into countries and have them organize a “booth” with food, talent, costumes, and decorations with the help of Council. Today we learned about adjectives and using them while making interesting Fair Tales.
Our Fairy Tale of the week is The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We each took a character to focus on by drawing it in its setting and describing how this character is different than the others. The students are looking forward to acting out this story on Thursday Theatre. Thank you to all who brought in swimming forms and money. We also have 2 parent volunteers so far from our class, but we need 1 or 2 more MALE VOLUNTEERS to help with all the grade 1/2 boys in the change room. Please email me if you are up for this and/or need to fill out volunteer clearance still. Thank you! We celebrated 2 birthdays today in our class. Dax J has his birthday yesterday and Wesley has his today. We sang to them and presented their birthday certificates. Congratulations boys!
New Spelling List this week for Team Orange and Red: want was well went what white who will with Since they are W words, it is super important to be looking at all the letter sounds each word makes in order to tell them apart. Thanks for parent support in this! We started looking at Nunavut today, and the students had lots of fun building Inukshuks. See you tomorrow! |
