Today we did literacy work with the starting sounds ch, sh, and th. The students sorted words in the three categories and come up with their own, lots of focus on sushi and sashimi for the sh category. :)
We had big buddies today too and finished our Responsibility posters that are now hanging around the school. Great teamwork! Tomorrow the big buddies have offered to help us with our Thursday Theatre which we are hoping to do outside. They can help us read and write some new scripts. The theme will be Ocean! Reminder to bring back library books tomorrow! Thanks! Keep up the home reading too.

Happy Warm Day Everyone!
We were all in high spirits today with this 'heat wave' so we decided to have a Pirate Day! It was all very exciting, we read some pirate books together, talked about pirate words like 'aye', 'ar' and 'shiver me timbers' and also made our very own pirate maps with routes to treasure. The students learned about map features and have mastered making their own compasses which is so important for finding treasure! This week in literacy, we are focusing on Lips the FIsh to help us read. She is part of the Beany Decoding Animals I posted about last week. We looked at beginning sounds today, and tomorrow we will look at 2 letter beginning sounds like sh, ch, and th. We have also have Big Buddies tomorrow with our grade 6 class! Finally, remember to keep handing back your photo forms! Thanks. Ms. Groen We had a busy end to the week today! Our day was full!
We learned about feelings this morning and how to map where we feel them the most on our bodies. Also, clips from the movie 'Inside Out' helped- I highly recommend this movie for social emotional learning at this age or any age really. I have attached pictures to show this. We also did Science. We looked at Fall with our 5 senses. We can up with lots of great ideas including sounds like rustling leaves, smells like hockey, tastes like pie, feels like cool air. and looks like changing colours. This afternoon we did art with leaves. The students worked with crayons and water colours to create their art! They turned out really well. Reminder: No School Monday so we will see everyone Tuesday! Have a great long weekend! Hi Parents,
We have started to use these Animal Strategies in class to help us read. So far we have covered Chunky Monkey and are on Stretchy Snake this week. I encourage you to ask your reader about them and use them to read at home. Thanks for your help! Pictures were sent home today. Orders are due back at school by October 19th. Retakes will be on November 3rd. Thanks!
Also, just a reminder to check your email about tomorrow. This information is not allowed on the blog for safety reasons so I have emailed you yesterday regarding tomorrow's events. Thanks for talking to your child about this in advance. We had Big Buddies today and made acrostic poems about this month's theme: Responsibility. Rosscarock chooses a new character education goal each month that we can focus on and this month we are making posters to put around the school with our grade 6 class Buddies. Ask your child which words they used for their Responsibility poem! See you tomorrow! Just a reminder that Library and Thursday Theatre are tomorrow. We are looking forward to have more drama in our class on Thursdays. Happy Tuesday Back to school!
We enjoyed sharing about all of our wonderful Thanksgiving's today! Sounds like everyone had a great time with friends and family. This week our Star of the Week is Marielle. She shared a special rock today and we started a book for her. A few words to describe her are: artistic, kind and a good friend - according to her friends! We did Social Studies today as well, and learned more about where we are on the Map. In pairs, the students drew themselves on a map of the world and added information about Who, What, Where, When and Why on their map. The students are also working on Spoooky Sentences, and we had a few authors share their writing today- Dax B, Wesley, Clayton and Kai. We are very excited about our learning this month as Hallowe'en is quickly approaching and we need to get ready! Dear parent,
Teach your Monster to Read is a free game which helps children to master the key first stages of reading. It’s been created by the Usborne Foundation, led by Peter Usborne (of Usborne Publishing) We’re using it at school, and your child will benefit more from the game if they can play at home. It’s free, and it's really easy to log in. Just use the details below. Note that this game works on a computer and tablets so your child’s account and progress could be linked across devices. Please click on this link and use the login: your first name and the password: cat Have fun teaching your monster to read! http://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/u/953176 We did a lot of hands-on creative work today!
This morning we did Theatre Thursday and had 4 drama groups presenting their own dramatic poem like a play! It was wonderful to see their creativity and the scripts that they added onto their plays to make them more exciting. The grade 2's were the narrators and the grade 1's acted, for the most part. We want to do this every Thursday so we coined the term Thursday Theatre. We finished our Thankful Turkeys today and they were sent home. Please look at them together. They are quite something! On that note, I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving long weekend and I will see you all back for school on Tuesday. Take care! Today we focused on a poem and a writing activity about Thanksgiving coming up. We can be thankful for so much! I will post our thankful list tomorrow, but please ask your child what they put on their Thankful Turkey today!
Library books due tomorrow:) Happy home reading tonight. Reminder no school on Friday or Monday coming up. The snow is melting! Yay! But I am glad to see everyone's outdoor gear on to keep us warm out there. Thank you!
I can see our writing improving as our morning work continues! We are starting to be able to chunk words too. Ask your child to find 'chunky monkeys' in their books they are reading at home (it's a smaller word within a larger word). Thanks for a great start to home reading as well. We did Science and Social today and continued our talk about the uses of water. We also looked at a school map and practiced getting places by using north, south, east and west for directions. The students navigated the hall ways like explorers! Our class has big buddies tomorrow! It's going to be a wonderful Wednesday! |
